International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research Bangladesh (icddr,b)

icddr,b is an international health and population research and training institution. In collaboration with partners from academic and research institutions throughout the world, the Centre carries out research and training, and provides clinical services to thousands of needy patients. The Centre works to prevent and control the major infectious diseases of Bangladesh and other developing countries, with particular emphasis on epidemiology, clinical and laboratory research, and vaccine evaluation.

The Centre has both national and international staff, including public health scientists, laboratory scientists, clinicians, nutritionists, epidemiologists, demographers, social and behavioural scientists, IT professionals, and experts in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, vaccine sciences, etc.

The Mycobacteriology Laboratory is one of the most prominent research units of icddr,b. It is equipped with precision instruments for carrying out various research projects on the diagnosis of tuberculosis, as well as on the molecular biology, immunology, and molecular epidemiology of this disease. The Mycobacteriology Laboratory is equipped with a BSL II plus facility which maintains negative pressure inside the room continuously. This facility has four class II A2 biosafety cabinets designed to process biological samples and maintain sterile conditions for cultures and other sophisticated experiments.

The main lab (also a BSL II lab) is situated adjacent to the BSL II plus facility. It comprises a separate media preparation room, a tissue culture room, a pre-PCR room, PCR room, a post-PCR room, a wash room and several workbenches for experiments. The computers are connected to ELISA Readers and gel documentation systems, and are used for word processing and data analyses. They are also connected to a Centre-wide computer network that provides access to high-speed internet and data processing programs.
