The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Lebanon was built on the Innovation and Sports Campus of Saint Joseph University in Beirut and inaugurated on May 13, 2011 in the presence of Alain Mérieux. This esteemed laboratory reflects the close ties between France and Saint Joseph University.
Mission
The mission of the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory of Lebanon is to fight infectious diseases and combat epidemics with the view to serve the most vulnerable communities.
The Laboratory's infrastructure meets international biosecurity and biosafety level-3 standards, with comprehensive expertise for the detection of mycobacteria (tuberculosis) and other pathogens.
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory is located in Block C, on the 5th floor of the Innovation and Sports campus.
Covering more than 400 m2, facilities at the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory include:
- Several BLS2 and BSL2+ laboratories
- 2 BSL3 laboratories
Governance
As part of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Saint Joseph University, the laboratory is overseen by a Strategic Steering Council made up of three colleges, with:
- 2 representatives from Saint Joseph University
- 2 representatives from Fondation Mérieux
- 2 qualified individuals selected for their knowledge of science or public health, who are independent of the University and the Foundation, with one being appointed by the University and the other by the Foundation
- a representative from the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Lebanon.
Professor Marianne Abi Fadel, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, has been the Administrative and Scientific Director since June 2017.
