The Virology Laboratory of Zaporozhye State Medical University became a member of the GABRIEL network in January 2013. This certified laboratory, created in 1973, covers an area of 266 square meters.
The Virology Laboratory has a full range of the most technologically-advanced equipment and has a Biosafety Level 2 facility for handling infectious agents. It is part of the Zaporozhye Regional Laboratory Center of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service.
Zaporozhye State Medical University is an educational establishment that comprises the following divisions: the Scientific Research Institute for Medicine and Ecology, the Institute of Clinical Pathology, the Central Scientific Research Laboratory, the Department of Doctoral and Postgraduate Studies, the Editorial Department, the Center of Informatics, Analytical Support and Testing, the Patent Department, the Scientific Research Division, and the Department of Metrology.
Objectives
The lab's main objective is to improve the understanding of infectious diseases and their control through the identification of the causative agents for human infections, the study of epidemiological markers of active infections, and the epidemiological surveillance of virulence factors.
Laboratory activities
The laboratory conducts tests for the identification of a wide range of viral infections, such as those caused by respiratory viruses, herpes viruses, enteroviruses, etc. It also carries out testing to monitor the intensity of the immune response.
Testing makes use of all the diagnostic methods at our disposal, including viral culture and direct viral antigen detection, infectious disease serology, nucleic acid amplification techniques, and sequencing technologies.
