Main missions
The Virology Laboratory (LIM-52) at the Tropical Medicine Institute of São Paulo (IMT-SP) is devoted to research in infectious diseases with an emphasis on tropical medicine. Specialized personnel carry out research and teaching on tropical diseases.
Expertise
Characterization and validation of diagnostic tests for various diseases using cell culture, conventional serology, conventional PCR, real time PCR, sequencing and metagenomics. Teaching and staff training about diagnostic testing for infectious diseases.
Research activities
Currently at the Virology Laboratory (LIM-52), we are focusing on arboviruses (characterization and validation of diagnostic tests for different arboviruses: dengue, zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, cell culture, conventional serology, real-time PCR, sequencing and metagenomics); infections in immunosuppressed patients, viral hepatitis ( research on hepatitis A,B,C, delta ,E, and TTV, viral hepatitis co-infection with HIV and other viruses, diagnosis, pathogenesis, treatment, and viral resistance), HPV infection, respiratory infections, viral phylogeny, central nervous system infections, therapeutic trials for yellow fever, and other topics. Researchers at our virology laboratory are members of several international scientific networks.
