Faculty of Pharmacy in Phnom Penh
In 2001 Fondation Mérieux and Fondation Pierre Fabre provide aid to the Royal Government of Cambodia with the construction of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Phnom Penh which was inaugurated on 17 January 2003.
In 2005, Fondation Mérieux built a molecular biology and clinical pharmarcology laboratory conforming to international standards. The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory (RML) in Cambodia aims at strengthening the training and research carried out at the University of Health Sciences by working on public health issues in Cambodia.
The Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Cambodia has around 120 m2 of laboratory space including a biosafety level 2 laboratory (BSL2) organised in 5 rooms:
- Clinical Pharmacology Unit: 1 room used for drug analysis of HIV+ blood and HPLC
- Molecular Biology Unit: 4 rooms used for mix preparation and DNA extraction (BSL2), culture (BSL2), post amplification detection and storage of biological samples.
The equipment includes:
- thermocyclers
- an EasyQ real-time quantitative nucleic acid detection system
- a real-time PCR
- an EasyMAG automatic nucleic acid extraction system
- a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
- a dHPLC from Trangenomics
The team of the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Cambodia is composed of:
- The Director of the laboratory (currently completing his PhD)
- Two assistants
- Masters’ Degree students
The mission of the Rodolphe Mérieux Laboratory in Cambodia is to:
- Participate in the training of students (medical doctors and pharmacists), especially in the field of medical biology, by giving them the possibility to conduct research projects on infectious diseases.
- Carry out projects which can have an impact on public health problems of the country.
